Wood is the most prevalent space for the characters from Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. ‘When I was a child it always looked mysterious, scary and dark, so that’s why I want to experience real/ fictive woods from my childhood’. (L.A.)
When I got the invitation to participate in week residency in Kassel I was really happy because I will have the opportunity to visit the most mysterious woods which came from fairy tales. It is called Reinhardswald (Reinhards Forest) and is based around Kassel.
I would say that fairy tale was most affective and one of the first inspiration which gave birth for the child imagination. I was reading lots of fairy tales in these days and noticed that the most prevalent space where all those magic spells, sleeping princesses, witches and frightening beasts were ‘acting’ is Wood.
I have my own imagination from my childhood of this mysterious space. But on the other hand I am really curious how these real woods look like. Do they look scary, dark? Of course there is another side of this visiting. We all have imagination. And we are always sad and disappointed when somebody denied it. So, my project will present the impression of the space, which was always so important for me. And I believe that it will also affect some other people imagination.
I will never forget how my mother and grandmother were scaring me with talking about woods. They used to say: ‘don’ t go to the woods, because there is so dark and dangerous and somebody could catch you’. Doesn’t it remind you something?
Of course once I didn’t listen to them and went to the woods to bring some flowers for my mother. She was looking for me around all my living area. Finally, I’ve got abuse.
